PHNOM PENH – Cambodian authorities have cracked down on an illegal pornography operation in the capital, arresting 12 suspects involved in the production and distribution of explicit content.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Gendarmerie, led by Commander Rath Sreang, conducted a raid on June 4 at a flat located on Street 242 in Boeung Prolit commune, Prampi Makara district. The raid resulted in the arrest of six Chinese nationals, five Cambodians, and one Malaysian.
Authorities seized computers, condoms, and a variety of sex toys used in the filming and live-streaming of pornographic material.
According to Sreang, the operation was carried out in coordination with Seng Mengsrun, the deputy prosecutor at Phnom Penh Municipal Court. The 12 suspects were sent to court on June 6 for further legal action. It remains unclear how long the group had been operating or how widely the content was distributed.
Cambodian law strictly prohibits the production and dissemination of pornographic content. Under the Law on Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation, anyone caught possessing, distributing, or publicly displaying pornography can face imprisonment of 7 days to 1 month and fines ranging from 100,000 to 200,000 riel (approximately $25–$50).
Those found guilty of producing pornographic material may face 1 month to 1 year in prison and fines up to 2,000,000 riel ($500). If children are involved, the prison sentence can extend to 10 years.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to enforcing these laws and clamping down on exploitative content, particularly involving foreign nationals.
