Thai Police Arrest Suspected Cambodian Spy Near Surin Border
A suspected Cambodian spy was arrested by Thai police on July 27 near the Thai-Cambodian border in Phanom Dong Rak district, Surin province. Authorities say the man was caught collecting sensitive information on Thai military installations, heightening security concerns and sparking fresh calls for tighter border monitoring.
The arrest was made public by a Facebook post from local news source Prat Sam Si. According to the report, the man was detained while allegedly gathering intelligence on Thai military positions close to the border. Police discovered him with documents and photographic evidence believed to have captured key coordinates and visuals of Thai military bases.
The suspect reportedly appeared to be conducting surveillance while traveling on a motorcycle. Officers became suspicious of his behavior and stopped him for questioning. Upon investigation, authorities found detailed notes and several photographs of military facilities, raising concerns about national security and espionage activities in the region.
This is not the first such incident in the area. In recent years, heightened tensions and disputes along the Thai-Cambodian border have led to multiple arrests of individuals suspected of spying. Many locals fear that foreign operatives may be scouting vulnerable areas for strategic advantage or relaying information back to their respective countries.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity, particularly anyone observed taking photographs near military zones, noting down coordinates, or exhibiting unusual behavior near restricted areas.
A police spokesperson emphasized the importance of public cooperation, stating, “Border communities are the eyes and ears of our security network. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.”
The arrest has also led to renewed discussions among government officials regarding the need for reinforced surveillance systems and stricter screening protocols at border crossings.
