Australia’s First Nitazene Vape Supply Arrest Uncovers 2.1kg of Deadly Synthetic Opioid
New South Wales Police have made a landmark arrest in what they say is the first case in Australia involving the supply of highly potent nitazene-laced vape liquid.
A 20‑year‑old man was taken into custody last Friday after Strike Force Southminster detectives raided a property in Revesby, in Sydney’s south‑west. The operation uncovered vape hardware, vials, electronics, and $7,180 in cash. Police also seized two imitation firearms and an electrical weapon for further forensic testing.
Strike Force Investigation
Strike Force Southminster was established to target the distribution of nitazenes in Sydney. Police allege that between March and July, the accused operated a sophisticated network producing and selling vape liquid vials laced with nitazene — a synthetic opioid many times more powerful than fentanyl.
The products, marketed as “supercharged,” were allegedly prepared, packaged, and distributed for profit. Authorities say the man has been charged with supplying a prohibited drug in commercial quantity and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime.
During a court appearance last Saturday, bail was refused, and the accused is scheduled to reappear next month.
Discovery of Major Drug Cache
On Monday, investigators opened a safe seized from the Revesby property, finding an additional 1.8 kilograms of nitazene. Combined with earlier seizures, the total quantity recovered during the investigation stands at 2.1 kilograms — an amount police warn could produce a staggering number of lethal doses.
Detective Superintendent John Watson, head of the NSW Police Drug and Firearms Squad, said the case marks a dangerous new phase in the illicit drug market.
“Nitazenes are highly addictive, incredibly potent, and can be lethal,” Watson said. “By lacing vape liquid with these synthetic opioids, suppliers are deliberately creating dependency — hooking users to ensure repeat business. It’s calculated, dangerous, and entirely profit-driven.”
Watson emphasised the unprecedented nature of the case, noting: “This is the first time in Australia someone has been charged with supplying nitazene-laced vape liquid, which demonstrates a disturbing evolution in the illicit drug trade. Our squad is constantly adapting to meet these emerging threats head-on.”
Health Concerns and Overdose Risks
Nitazenes, part of a family of synthetic opioids, are considered even stronger than fentanyl. NSW Health’s chief addiction medicine specialist, Dr. Hester Wilson, warned that the public must be aware of the extreme risks associated with these substances.
“It is important that people recognise the signs of an opioid overdose early and know how to respond,” Wilson said. “Opioid overdose symptoms can include pinpoint pupils, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, slow breathing or snoring, or skin turning blue or grey.”
Authorities urge residents to seek immediate medical help if an overdose is suspected and to familiarise themselves with the use of naloxone, a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses.
Growing Threat in Vaping Market
While vaping has long been associated with nicotine and THC products, experts say this case illustrates how the market is expanding into far more dangerous territory. The inclusion of nitazenes in vape liquid creates a discrete and easily consumed delivery method for a drug that, in even small amounts, can be fatal.
The incident has also raised alarms among public health officials about the accessibility of vaping products to younger demographics, who may unknowingly consume dangerous substances.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
The accused remains behind bars as prosecutors prepare their case. Police are continuing investigations into potential associates and supply chains, and further arrests have not been ruled out.
This case signals both a troubling shift in drug supply methods and a warning that the nation’s illicit drug market is evolving rapidly — blending emerging technology with some of the world’s most dangerous synthetic drugs.
