A Florida man is behind bars after his wife was discovered dead in a canal near their home following an explosive argument over alleged cheating, police said.
Jeffrey Ernest Evans, 43, was arrested Monday night on a domestic violence battery charge after his wife, Jessica Evans, was found floating face down in the water just steps from their Coral Springs home. Authorities have not yet charged him in her death, but the investigation remains ongoing.
Heated Fight Turns Deadly
According to a probable cause affidavit, the couple began arguing the night before when Jessica accused Jeffrey of infidelity. She left home but returned the next day, confessing she had cheated on him “for revenge” because she believed he had done the same.
On the night of her death, the argument reignited when Jessica allegedly tried to take her husband’s laptop to search for evidence. Jeffrey told police they scuffled, and she fell to the floor. Later, he said, things appeared to calm down as they went into the bedroom together.
Moments after he stepped out, Jessica was gone. Jeffrey claimed he found her outside yelling, “Help! He’s going to kill me!” while running between houses. He admitted trying to restrain her but then returned inside and dialed 911, fearing he would look like the aggressor.
Witness and Discovery
A neighbor separately called 911, reporting a woman screaming that her husband was trying to kill her. When officers arrived, Jessica was found unresponsive in a nearby canal and pronounced dead.
Police have not yet released the cause or manner of death. Jeffrey Evans is currently being held in Broward County Jail on a $1,000 bond.
The investigation into Jessica Evans’ death is still active.
