British Woman Found Dead on Koh Phangan Beach

KOH PHANGAN, Thailand — A 54-year-old British woman was found dead early Tuesday morning on Chao Phao Beach in Koh Phangan, sparking an investigation by local authorities. The deceased, identified as Ms. Alison, was discovered wearing only an orange bra, with her underwear found nearby on the shoreline.

The discovery was made at around 6:30 a.m. by a local jogger, Mr. Theerapong, who immediately contacted the police. Officers from Koh Phangan Police Station, along with a duty doctor from Koh Phangan Hospital, conducted an initial examination at the scene. There were no visible injuries or signs of foul play, and preliminary findings point to drowning as the cause of death. Doctors reported significant amounts of sand and water in the lungs, consistent with accidental submersion.

Authorities learned that Ms. Alison had been staying alone in a nearby bungalow for nearly a month and was scheduled to check out on June 11. Staff familiar with her reported she frequently consumed alcohol, and on June 2, she had suffered a fall outside a convenience store, hitting her head. Despite the incident, she refused medical assistance and was helped back to her bungalow by passersby.

Witnesses say she was last seen drinking on Monday night and later went swimming alone near the beach, a few meters from her accommodation. Her room was later inspected, and police found her passport and personal belongings undisturbed.

Her body has been transported to Koh Phangan Hospital for a full autopsy. Police are working with the British Embassy to contact her next of kin.

Officials have reminded the public—especially tourists—to avoid swimming alone at night, particularly under the influence of alcohol, as such behavior significantly increases the risk of accidents.
