Cambodian Man Arrested in Bangkok with Gun and Explosives

Bangkok police have arrested a Cambodian national after discovering a firearm and explosive devices in a rented room, following intelligence that the suspect was preparing a retaliatory attack. Authorities said the arrest prevented a potentially serious act of violence in a residential area of the capital.

The operation took place on the evening of December 27 in the Khlong Sam Wa district. Officers from Bang Chan Police Station carried out the raid under the direction of senior Metropolitan Police commanders. Among those overseeing the operation were Pol Lt Gen Siam Boonsom, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, along with high-ranking investigation officials. The targeted action followed reports that a foreign national was stockpiling weapons and exhibiting behavior suggesting an imminent violent act.

The suspect was identified as Mr. Koemeang Moeun, 38, a Cambodian citizen. Police apprehended him inside a rented room in Soi Suan Laem Khlong Nueng 11, Bang Chan sub-district. During the search of the room, officers uncovered a homemade firearm, an improvised explosive device wrapped in black electrical tape, and a large quantity of firecrackers. Investigators believe the firecrackers were intended to be modified for use as weapons.

According to police questioning, Mr. Koemeang admitted that he had recently been involved in a dispute with rivals. He claimed he had been chased and assaulted with a knife, leaving him fearful of further attacks. Investigators said that, driven by fear and a desire for revenge, he allegedly began preparing weapons to retaliate against those he believed had threatened him.

In addition to the gun and explosive device, police also found other materials consistent with the construction of improvised weapons. These included items linked to Molotov-style incendiary devices, further heightening concerns about public safety. Authorities emphasized that the suspect’s room was located in a populated residential area, increasing the risk of harm to bystanders if an attack had occurred.

Mr. Koemeang has been charged with several serious offenses, including possession of a firearm without a permit, possession of explosive materials that cannot legally be licensed, and possession of untaxed or improperly taxed goods. He was transferred to Bang Chan Police Station, where investigators will continue formal questioning and prepare the case for legal proceedings.

Police officials stated that the swift action taken by officers likely prevented a deadly incident. They reaffirmed their commitment to cracking down on illegal weapons and explosive materials, particularly in urban communities where such threats can endanger innocent residents. Authorities also urged the public to report suspicious behavior, noting that timely information plays a crucial role in preventing violent crimes.
