Clumsy Arsonist Sets Themselves on Fire in Queensland Attack

A bungled arson attempt on a tobacconist in Capalaba, Queensland, has left the suspect accidentally setting themselves on fire before fleeing the scene.

The attack occurred around 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Finucane Road and Old Cleveland Road. At the time, both an employee and a customer were inside the tobacconist but managed to escape without injury as flames quickly spread.

Witnesses reported seeing a blue Mazda speeding away from the scene with fire visibly burning inside the vehicle. The dramatic escape was captured on video, showing flames flickering from the front seat.

When emergency services arrived, the shopfront was still ablaze but was quickly extinguished by fire crews.

Getaway Car Found Torched

Shortly after the attack, police located the blue Mazda abandoned and engulfed in flames near Goodge Court in Birkdale. It is believed the car had been deliberately set on fire as the suspect attempted to destroy evidence.

Queensland Police have since established a crime scene at both locations and are appealing for information from the public to help identify the offender.

A History of Trouble

Local business owners have voiced frustration, noting this was not the first time the tobacconist had been targeted. Previous incidents had already raised concerns about repeat criminal activity in the area.

Despite the blaze, no injuries were reported, and authorities confirmed that both the employee and customer escaped safely before the fire consumed the store.

Suspect Still on the Run

As of Saturday morning, the suspected arsonist remains on the run. Police are analyzing CCTV footage, witness reports, and forensic evidence collected from both the Capalaba tobacconist and the burned Mazda in Birkdale.

The bizarre twist—that the perpetrator set themselves alight during the crime—has drawn widespread attention, highlighting both the recklessness of the act and the potential for serious self-inflicted injury.

Queensland Police urge anyone with information about the incident or the suspect’s whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers.
