Five Dead in New York City Shooting, Including Police Officer and Suspect
At least five people, including a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer and the suspected gunman, were killed Monday evening during a mass shooting inside a high-rise office building at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.
The assailant, armed with an M4 rifle, opened fire shortly after 6 p.m. local time, causing panic inside the skyscraper, which houses major financial firms and the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL).
According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, surveillance footage showed a man stepping out of a double-parked black BMW between 51st and 52nd streets on Park Avenue. Carrying the military-style rifle in his right hand, the man entered the lobby of the building and immediately opened fire on a uniformed NYPD officer stationed there.
The officer, later identified as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, died at the scene. Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, leaves behind a wife and two young sons; his wife is currently pregnant with their third child.
“This brave officer died protecting New Yorkers,” said Mayor Eric Adams during a late-night press conference. “He moved this city with his story, and he gave his life for it.”
After killing Officer Islam, the gunman proceeded to shoot two more individuals in the lobby: a female civilian and a building security officer. Both died on the scene. The shooter then took an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he fatally shot a male victim whose identity has not yet been released.
One additional victim is currently hospitalized and receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the attack.
The gunman was later identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, who had a listed residence in Las Vegas, Nevada. Authorities say the motive behind the shooting remains unclear and is still under active investigation.
Commissioner Tisch confirmed that Tamura was killed during the incident, although it remains unknown whether he was shot by responding officers or died by suicide.
Photos of Tamura entering the building with the rifle were widely circulated by major media outlets following the attack.
The building at 345 Park Avenue is one of the city’s major office towers, housing companies like Blackstone, KPMG, Deutsche Bank, and the NFL’s main headquarters. It lies just south of Central Park and a few blocks from Rockefeller Center, in a typically bustling and secure part of the city.
The incident has prompted renewed conversations about building security and gun violence in urban areas. Governor Kathy Hochul called the shooting “a horrifying tragedy” and vowed that her office would support a full investigation.
The NYPD is reviewing hours of surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and examining Tamura’s background and digital records to uncover a motive.
“We are working tirelessly to understand what led to this senseless act,” Tisch said. “Our city mourns tonight, but we will also seek justice for the victims.”
City officials have also stated that increased security measures will be put in place at high-profile commercial buildings throughout Midtown in the coming days.
As the investigation unfolds, the tragedy serves as another grim reminder of the deadly consequences of gun violence in the United States—this time striking at the heart of New York City’s corporate and cultural core.
