Foreigner Arrested Over Serangoon Gardens Break-Ins

A Chinese national suspected of carrying out a series of house break-ins was taken back to one of the alleged crime scenes in Serangoon Gardens on Monday morning, December 15, as police continued investigations into the case.

The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Huang Xiaozong, is accused of breaking into three landed properties in Singapore. On Monday at about 10.55am, Huang was brought to a row of terrace houses along Chuan Drive in an unmarked police vehicle. Escorted by two police officers, he kept his head down while being questioned by another investigator near the burgled home. He left the scene shortly after, at around 11.02am.

According to court documents seen by AsiaOne, Huang allegedly climbed over the gate of the Chuan Drive property at about 8.40pm on December 7. Once inside, he is accused of stealing a significant amount of jewellery, including a pair of wedding rings, a diamond-studded pendant, and several necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings. The total value of the stolen items was estimated at approximately S$47,750.

Police said the suspect is believed to have been involved in at least two other housebreaking cases. These incidents reportedly took place at a landed property along Li Hwan Close in Serangoon Gardens and in the vicinity of Sentosa Island between December 7 and 8. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the methods used in the additional cases, but investigations are ongoing.

In a statement released on December 9, police confirmed that they had recovered the stolen jewellery linked to the Chuan Drive case. Officers also seized S$1,000 in cash, four ez-link cards, as well as items believed to have been used as disguises, including a cap and a wig. These items are expected to be used as evidence in court.

Huang was formally charged in court on December 10 for the Chuan Drive housebreaking. Since then, he has been remanded in custody. His case is scheduled to be heard again on December 17, when further details of the prosecution’s case may be presented.

The incident has drawn attention from residents in Serangoon Gardens, an area known for its quiet residential streets and landed homes. Police have reminded homeowners to remain vigilant, ensure gates and doors are securely locked, and report any suspicious activity promptly.

Singapore Police Force officers reiterated their commitment to addressing property crimes and holding offenders accountable, regardless of nationality. They also noted that crime scene visits, such as the one conducted on Monday, are a routine part of investigations and are carried out to reconstruct events and gather additional evidence.

As legal proceedings continue, Huang remains in remand, and police have not ruled out the possibility of further charges if evidence links him to additional offences.
