FRENCH MAN ARRESTED AFTER STEALING FROM NEIGHBOR IN KOH SAMUI
KOH SAMUI – Police on the popular tourist island of Koh Samui have arrested a 29-year-old French national accused of stealing valuables from his neighbor’s home, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. The arrest followed a swift investigation by Bo Phut police in coordination with Surat Thani immigration officers.
The suspect, identified by police as Mr. Arezi, was detained at his residence on November 27 after a local resident reported a break-in at his rented house in the Bo Phut area. The victim, a 25-year-old man from Chiang Mai, told officers that several personal items had gone missing from his property in Moo 5.
According to investigators, the break-in came to light when the victim noticed signs of tampering at his home and later reviewed CCTV footage from the property. The security cameras revealed a foreign man living next door entering the house without permission. This footage became a key piece of evidence and helped police identify the suspect.
After reviewing the video, officers accompanied the victim to the neighboring home where the French man lived. During the visit, the victim immediately recognized his missing belongings, including a suitcase and a portable speaker, which were found in the suspect’s living room. Police then placed the man under arrest.
Authorities say the suspect did not resist during the arrest, and the stolen items were recovered on-site. Officers are continuing their investigation to determine whether this incident is connected to any other thefts in the area. The suspect is expected to face charges related to burglary and unlawful entry.
Local police highlighted that cooperation between residents and law enforcement played an important role in the quick resolution of the case. They encouraged both locals and foreign residents to report suspicious activity promptly, especially in communities where rental properties and short-term stays are common.
Koh Samui, one of Thailand’s most visited resort islands, sees a large number of expatriates and tourists throughout the year. Authorities have noted that while most foreign residents comply with local regulations, occasional criminal incidents can occur, making community vigilance essential.
Surat Thani immigration officials also confirmed they are reviewing the suspect’s immigration status as part of the legal process. Foreign nationals charged with crimes in Thailand may face further immigration consequences depending on the severity of the offense and the court’s ruling.
For now, police say the recovered items will be returned to the victim, and the suspect will remain in custody while awaiting further legal proceedings.
The incident serves as a reminder that even in well-known tourist destinations, property security and neighbor awareness remain important. Police in Koh Samui have urged residents—both Thai and foreign—to ensure that their homes are properly secured and to make use of CCTV systems whenever possible.
