Mae Sai, Chiang Rai – A fugitive couple wanted for the cold-blooded murder of a 72-year-old farmer in Phatthalung has been arrested in Chiang Rai, ending their attempt to flee across the Myanmar border.
Dramatic Apartment Raid in Mae Sai
On January 22, 2025, police commandos raided a rented apartment in Mae Sai District, arresting Sahaphap, 51, also known as Homong, and Natthita, 32, also known as Namnoi. The pair had been on the run since January 10, when they allegedly gunned down the farmer in an execution-style attack.
A Premeditated Killing
The victim, affectionately known as “Uncle Phop”, was a respected salak orchard owner in Khuan Khanun District. He was shot six times, with investigators describing the murder as premeditated and targeted. Arrest warrants for the suspects cite charges of premeditated murder and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Though both suspects denied involvement, police say forensic evidence, eyewitness accounts, and tracking data link them to the crime.
Border Escape Foiled
Acting on a tip-off, police traced the fugitives to Mae Sai, where they were allegedly preparing to cross into Tachileik, Myanmar. “They thought they could disappear across the border,” said a lead investigator. “But our officers acted swiftly and decisively.”
The suspects will be transferred to Phatthalung Provincial Police for formal prosecution.
Outrage in the Community
The killing of Uncle Phop has left the community reeling. Widely admired for his contributions to local agriculture, his death has sparked outrage and demands for justice. Police continue to investigate the motive behind the slaying.
