‘It was like a movie’: Distressing Knife Fight at Melbourne Shopping Centre
A violent knife fight between two rival groups has shocked shoppers at a busy Melbourne shopping centre, prompting increased security and questions over public safety policies.
The brawl erupted at Broadmeadows Central in the city’s north at around 7:20 pm yesterday. Witnesses reported that the confrontation began in the car park before spilling inside the shopping centre.
According to police, the two groups fled the scene in a silver Honda and a white Mazda before officers arrived. Mobile phone footage shared online shows several men dressed in black appearing to thrust weapons at each other in a chaotic melee.
Shoppers Caught in the Middle
Staff quickly ushered customers into stores, pulling down shutters as the confrontation escalated. Chairs were hurled across the floor as bystanders scrambled to safety.
One witness described how the situation escalated in seconds:
“Two people started to fight out of nowhere. Then bang, pull out the machetes. It was like a movie. Like, you know, Gladiator?”
The violent clash left shoppers shaken. An elderly woman reportedly collapsed from shock during the incident and required medical attention.
Shopping Centre Response
A spokesperson for Broadmeadows Central called the event “distressing” for both staff and customers, confirming that security has been increased.
“We do not tolerate criminal or anti-social behaviour in our centres and are committed to supporting Victoria Police in their investigation,” the spokesperson said.
Policy Questions Raised
The fight occurred just 500 metres from a machete bin, part of the Victorian government’s weapons amnesty program. The proximity has raised concerns about whether the amnesty is effectively reducing dangerous weapons on the streets.
Opposition leader Brad Battin criticised current policies, saying:
“Do we have to see someone die in a shopping centre to get the policies that keep people safe? We shouldn’t have to wait for that.”
Ongoing Investigation
No arrests have been made so far, and two individuals remain on the run. Victoria Police continue to investigate the incident, reviewing CCTV footage and appealing to the public for information.
The violent clash has left a lasting impression on shoppers and reignited debate over how best to address weapon-related violence in public spaces.
