PATTAYA, THAILAND – A violent altercation over motorcycle parts has left one man dead and another facing serious charges, following a deadly incident that unfolded in Pattaya on the morning of July 12, 2025.
Somjet Sapprasert, 31, a motorcycle mechanic, has been charged with causing bodily harm resulting in death after allegedly beating his customer and friend, Sonthaya Nuchlek, 33, known locally as “Toomtam,” during a heated argument.
Argument Turns Deadly
According to Pattaya police reports, the confrontation erupted around 11:00 AM on July 12. Police were alerted after Sonthaya’s relatives reported that he had been severely injured and rushed to Pattaya Hospital. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to significant trauma to his head and back, injuries consistent with being struck by a blunt object.
Authorities from Banglamung Police Station, led by Deputy Superintendent Lt. Col. Kornphong Sukwisit and Sub-Lt. Wutthipong Kasa, quickly launched an investigation. Officers tracked down a blue Mitsubishi Strada pickup truck identified as the vehicle used to transport Sonthaya to the hospital. The driver, Somjet Sapprasert, was subsequently located in Soi Wat Thung Krad and taken in for questioning.
Confession During Police Interrogation
During an intense two-hour interrogation, Somjet confessed to the fatal assault. He described an escalating argument that began earlier that morning near the railway tracks in Soi Wat Thung Krad—a location he frequents.
Somjet told investigators that Sonthaya, a regular customer who often brought his motorcycle for modifications, approached him carrying a long wooden stick, nearly a meter in length. Sonthaya reportedly claimed the stick was for “hitting dogs.”
The pair began discussing motorcycle parts, with Sonthaya complaining about high prices at Somjet’s shop compared to other mechanics. Somjet admitted he became angry and told Sonthaya to take his business elsewhere. The conversation spiraled into violence when, according to Somjet, Sonthaya punched him and swung the stick at him.
Somjet claimed he managed to dodge the blow, seize the stick from Sonthaya, and then struck him repeatedly in retaliation until he collapsed to the ground.
Attempt to Save Victim
Following the assault, Somjet said Sonthaya apologized, telling him, “I give up, I’m sorry.” The two reportedly exchanged words about why the situation had escalated, seemingly reconciling briefly. However, about ten minutes later, Sonthaya began suffering from chest tightness and breathing difficulties.
Realizing the gravity of the injuries, Somjet left the scene on his motorcycle to retrieve his pickup truck, then returned to transport Sonthaya to Pattaya Hospital. Despite efforts by medical staff, Sonthaya was pronounced dead.
Somjet told police he never intended to flee and waited at the hospital for hours before returning home, where officers later arrested him.
Police Seize Evidence
Police have seized key evidence in the case, including the 60-centimeter wooden stick used in the assault and the clothing worn by Somjet during the incident. Investigators also conducted a reenactment at the scene in Soi Wat Thung Krad as part of their inquiry into the events leading to Sonthaya’s death.
Somjet expressed remorse over his actions, apologizing to Sonthaya’s family and insisting he did not intend to kill his friend, attributing the fatal assault to a fit of rage.
Family Raises Questions
While police are moving ahead with charges, Sonthaya’s relatives remain skeptical about aspects of the incident, particularly the reported location of the fatal altercation. Speaking briefly to reporters, they expressed doubt that Sonthaya had any reason to be near the railway tracks where Somjet claims the incident took place.
The family is expected to retrieve Sonthaya’s body on July 13 for funeral rites at Wat Thung Krad. They have vowed to seek justice and clarity regarding the circumstances of his death.
Legal Proceedings Ahead
As of now, Somjet remains in police custody. He faces prosecution on charges of causing bodily harm resulting in death, a serious offence under Thai law.
Deputy Superintendent Lt. Col. Kornphong confirmed that investigations are ongoing to verify Somjet’s account and determine whether additional charges may be warranted.
“This is a tragic loss of life over what appears to be a dispute that spiraled out of control,” Lt. Col. Kornphong said. “We are committed to a thorough investigation to ensure justice for the victim and his family.”
The Pattaya community has been left stunned by the violent incident, which highlights the potential consequences of personal disputes escalating into deadly confrontations.
