Mississippi Man Gets Life for Murder of Wife of 31 Years

Mississippi Man Sentenced to Life for Wife’s Murder After 31-Year Marriage

A Mississippi man who confessed to fatally shooting his wife of over three decades has been sentenced to life in prison for her murder.

Tony Morris, 67, was found guilty of first-degree murder on Wednesday in the killing of his estranged wife, 64-year-old Kathleen Morris. The tragic incident unfolded on the morning of August 26, 2024, at the couple’s home in Terry, Mississippi.

According to Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones, deputies arrived at the residence around 7:15 a.m. after receiving a chilling 911 call from Tony Morris himself, who admitted to shooting his wife. Kathleen was discovered inside the home suffering from a gunshot wound to her upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tony’s brother told local reporters from ABC affiliate WAPT that the couple was in the midst of divorce proceedings at the time of the shooting, though no specific motive has been disclosed publicly.

Hinds County District Attorney Jodi E. Owens II emphasized the devastating consequences of domestic violence and moments of uncontrolled anger.

“A single moment of anger ended a 31-year marriage and took a life,” Owens said in a statement following the verdict. “Kathleen Morris lost her life during a moment of escalation that should have never happened.”

Owens urged the community to focus on both prevention and intervention when it comes to domestic violence.

“This case is an example of how quickly violence can overtake reason, and why prevention matters just as much as prosecution,” he continued. “As a community, this is why we must create space for people to ask for help, and support systems that respond before violence becomes the outcome.”

Tony Morris was convicted of deliberate design murder—a term under Mississippi law indicating intentional killing—and was sentenced to life in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

The case has left the Terry community reeling, highlighting the tragic impact of domestic violence and the irreversible consequences of actions taken in moments of rage.

Authorities and advocates alike continue to urge those experiencing domestic conflict to seek help before situations turn deadly.
