NC Man Kills Neighbor and Her Son in Dispute Over Trash

HENDERSON, North Carolina – A convicted murderer has been arrested for allegedly killing a 63-year-old woman and her 26-year-old son during a dispute over garbage, according to police in Henderson.

Authorities responded to the 600 block of Maple Street around 6:45 p.m. Sunday, where they found Teresa Davis and her son Joseph Jeffreys Jr. suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspected shooter, 41-year-old Michael Sharron Wright, was quickly identified and a warrant for two counts of murder was issued. Wright was previously convicted of killing his uncle in 2010 and had only been out of prison since January 2024.

Family friends say the tragic incident stemmed from a dispute between Wright and Davis, who were neighbors. Jeffreys had gone to Wright’s residence to confront him about allegedly throwing trash into Davis’ yard. Wright reportedly used Jeffreys’ own gun to shoot both mother and son.

“It was over trash. Over some freakin’ trash,” said Tennisha Eaton, a friend of Davis. “This woman is gone. This boy is gone. That’s senseless.”

Eaton also revealed that the shooting occurred in front of Jeffreys’ three children, who were in a car nearby.

“That’s so heartbreaking for the grandkids — to see their daddy and grandmother get killed,” she said.

Wright, previously convicted of second-degree murder for the 2010 slaying of his uncle Kirk Douglas Wright Sr., had served about 14 years before his release earlier this year. In that case, Kirk Wright was found buried in a shallow grave behind his home.

On Monday, Wright arranged an unusual surrender, contacting Granville County Sheriff Robert Fountain around 2:30 a.m. and stating he would only turn himself in to him. By 8 a.m., the two met in a restaurant parking lot in Louisburg, where Wright was taken into custody without incident.

“The community trusts me… they know I’m going to do the right thing,” Sheriff Fountain said.

Wright is currently held at the Granville County Detention Center without bond.
