Russian Woman Robbed in Pattaya, Police Launch Manhunt
A 29-year-old Russian woman fell victim to a daylight street robbery in the popular Thai beach city of Pattaya on July 29, prompting local police to launch a swift manhunt for the suspect. The incident occurred in Soi Chaloem Phrakiat 14, located in the Nong Prue subdistrict of Bang Lamung district.
Police Lieutenant Anirut Jehroh of Pattaya City Police Station responded to the report of the robbery. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found the woman—identified as Smirnova CMNPHOBA—visibly distressed and shaken by the sudden attack.
According to her statement, she was walking alone along the roadside with plans to exchange currency when a young man on a motorbike approached. Without warning, he snatched her shoulder bag and sped off before she could react. The victim screamed for help and attempted to chase after the thief, but he quickly disappeared down the street.
The stolen bag reportedly contained approximately 100 U.S. dollars in foreign currency and 1,100 Thai baht (about $35 USD) in local cash. The total value of the stolen items was estimated to be around 5,000 baht (roughly $155 USD). Thankfully, the victim was not physically harmed during the incident, though she was left emotionally shaken.
After the robbery, the woman sought help from nearby locals who promptly alerted the authorities. Officers quickly arrived at the scene, and Lieutenant Anirut reported the matter to Pattaya City Police Chief Colonel Anek Srathongyu. In response, Colonel Anek ordered immediate action, including a radio alert and roadblocks on major roads and alleys throughout the area in hopes of catching the fleeing suspect.
As of the latest update, the suspect remains at large. Authorities have not yet released a detailed description of the robber, though the victim described him as a young male on a motorcycle, dressed casually and wearing a helmet.
Investigators are now working to gather more information through CCTV footage from the crime scene and surrounding areas. They are also conducting field inquiries and speaking to potential witnesses who may have seen the suspect before or after the robbery.
The incident has raised concerns about tourist safety in Pattaya, a city known for its vibrant nightlife, beaches, and steady stream of international visitors. Though generally considered safe, Pattaya has seen periodic surges in petty crime, particularly involving bag snatchers and opportunistic thieves targeting tourists.
Police are urging residents and tourists alike to be cautious when walking alone, especially in quiet alleys or less-trafficked areas. They have also asked anyone with information about the robbery or the suspect to contact Pattaya Police Station immediately.
As of now, Smirnova CMNPHOBA is being provided support by authorities and local consular services. Police remain confident that the suspect will be tracked down quickly with the help of surveillance footage and public cooperation.
The case remains under active investigation.
