Temp Worker Nabbed for Stealing Gold in Bangkok

Police have arrested a 28-year-old temporary employee accused of stealing gold jewellery worth over 300,000 baht from a shop in Bangkok’s Wang Burapha area.

The suspect, identified as Kanchana, also known as Nam Petch, was apprehended on June 12 following an arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court on June 9.

According to Police Lieutenant General Siam Boonsom, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, and Police Major General Napasin Poolsawat, Deputy Commissioner of Investigations, Kanchana was arrested at 7:30 a.m. in Soi Phet Kasem 2, located in the Bangkok Yai district.

The theft occurred on May 21 while Kanchana was working on a trial basis as a sales assistant at a gold shop on Charoen Krung Road. Her role included selling jewellery and gold bars based on daily pricing set by the Gold Traders Association.

However, Kanchana failed to report back after her trial shift. Upon reviewing inventory, staff found that 6 baht weight of gold jewellery was missing. CCTV footage confirmed that she had taken four necklaces made of 96.5% gold: two necklaces weighing 2 baht each and two weighing 1 baht each. The total value was estimated at 312,600 baht, or around USD 9,640.

After a complaint was filed with Phra Ratchawang Police Station, investigators traced Kanchana to a residence in Soi Phet Kasem 2, where she admitted her identity during the arrest.

She was taken to Phra Ratchawang Police Station for legal processing and is now in the custody of investigators as further legal proceedings unfold.
