Two Laotians Busted Smuggling Drugs into Vietnam
QUANG TRI — Two Laotian nationals were arrested late on the night of July 21 for attempting to smuggle a massive haul of illegal narcotics into Vietnam, following a coordinated ambush by a joint task force near the border town of Khe Sanh.
Authorities confirmed the seizure of 17 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and 6,000 ketamine pills, marking one of the largest drug busts in the region so far this year.
The suspects — one man and one woman — are both residents of Khammouane Province in Laos. They were intercepted at approximately 9:30 p.m. along National Highway 9, near the Km58+800 marker in Khe Sanh Commune, a known transit point for cross-border smuggling.
The operation was led by a multi-agency task force comprising border guards, narcotics enforcement officers, reconnaissance teams, and traffic police. Acting on intelligence gathered in advance, the officers set up a controlled ambush and stopped the suspects as they attempted to bring the drugs into Vietnamese territory.
Upon inspection, authorities discovered tightly sealed packages containing synthetic crystal meth and bags filled with ketamine pills. Both suspects were immediately taken into custody and transferred to the Lao Bảo Border Post for interrogation and further legal proceedings.
Officials have not yet released the names of the two suspects, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation and the possibility of broader connections to regional trafficking networks.
A spokesperson for Vietnam’s drug enforcement unit described the bust as “a significant blow” to transnational narcotics operations that use Laos and Vietnam as part of a major drug corridor.
“The border between Vietnam and Laos continues to be a critical front line in the battle against drug trafficking,” the official said. “This arrest reflects the effectiveness of our cross-agency cooperation and our commitment to disrupting the drug supply at its source.”
Central Vietnam has long struggled with the flow of illegal drugs from the Golden Triangle, a notorious region encompassing parts of Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand. Law enforcement officials say methamphetamine and ketamine are among the most commonly smuggled substances, often destined for domestic markets or re-export to third countries.
Authorities in both Vietnam and Laos have stepped up their efforts in recent years through bilateral agreements, joint patrols, and intelligence sharing.
The suspects will face charges under Vietnam’s strict anti-drug laws, which carry severe penalties, including the death penalty for trafficking large quantities of narcotics.
Investigators are now working to determine the full extent of the operation and whether additional suspects or networks were involved. Further arrests may follow.
Local officials praised the swift coordination between agencies and urged continued vigilance among border communities. “This successful operation shows what can be achieved when we work together,” one officer said. “But the fight is far from over.”
