SYDNEY – A chilling daylight shooting at a popular kebab shop in Sydney’s south-west has left three people injured and authorities hunting for two gunmen who remain on the run.
The attack unfolded around 1:15 p.m. at M Brothers kebab shop on South Parade in Auburn, just steps from a busy train station. According to NSW Police Acting Commissioner Peter Thurtell, two masked gunmen entered the store and fired eight rounds before fleeing in a black BMW.
The suspected target of the attack was Samimjan Azari, 26, an underworld figure previously targeted in two separate shootings in Granville and Brighton-Le-Sands. Azari was hit in the arm and shoulder.
“This is the third attempt on this man’s life,” said Thurtell. “We believe the previous incidents are likely connected to this one.”
Azari had just reported to Auburn Police Station on bail about an hour before the attack, raising further questions about how the assailants tracked his movements.
Another unidentified man was shot in the face, and a 50-year-old woman, believed to be an innocent worker at the kebab shop, was shot twice in the torso. All three were taken to hospital and are in stable condition.
Authorities say the gunmen attempted to access the office at the back of the store but failed before escaping.
Premier Chris Minns condemned the shooting, calling it “shockingly brazen,” and warned criminal groups that law enforcement would pursue justice relentlessly.
Police Minister Yasmin Catley added, “It is absolutely abhorrent and we will not tolerate it.”
A crime scene has been established, with South Parade and nearby streets closed as Strike Force Falcon investigates. Police are urging the public to come forward with any information via Crime Stoppers.
