Parents Accused of Locking Kids in ‘Dungeon’ Room
A Pennsylvania couple has been arrested after police discovered their five children living in what authorities described as a “dungeon-like” room covered in filth and outfitted with surveillance cameras.
James Kahl, 65, and Carly Kahl, 41, of Redstone Township, were charged with multiple counts including endangering the welfare of children, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment following a state police investigation into the home.
Disturbing Discovery
On August 8, state troopers responded to a report of dangerous living conditions at the Kahl residence. Inside, investigators found five children — ages 5 to 14 — confined in a single room.
Police said the space had no beds, boarded-up windows, limited clothing, little food, and walls smeared with feces. Fleas were also present, and authorities noted that the father routinely locked the door from the outside, trapping the children for hours and overnight.
“This room functioned as a dungeon,” the Pennsylvania State Police report stated, noting the presence of three deadbolt locks on the outside and no handle on the inside for escape.
Surveillance and Control
Troopers also discovered that the room was wired with video cameras that fed directly into the father’s room, allowing constant surveillance.
A later search warrant uncovered a stun gun, a replica pistol, surveillance equipment, and drugs inside the residence.
Authorities confirmed that the children were immediately removed by Children and Youth Services after a local judge signed an emergency removal order. They remain in protective custody while forensic interviews continue.
Officials React
State trooper Ally Wilson called the scene “sickening,” adding that the treatment of the children was beyond comprehension.
Fayette County District Attorney Michael Aubele praised the relative who tipped off investigators. “We are very, very happy that a family member was willing to come forward,” he said. “I can’t imagine living in a household like what we saw.”
What’s Next
The Kahls remain in custody as prosecutors move forward with charges. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing as officials work to piece together the extent of the children’s abuse and neglect.
