VARANASI: A 20-year-old student from a private nursing institute was found unconscious and lying in a pool of blood on the staircase of a guest house in Varanasi on Wednesday morning, triggering a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Authorities from Sarnath police station responded quickly after being alerted by staff at the guest house. The young woman was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared her dead upon arrival. According to officials, no visible external injuries were found on her body, leaving the exact cause of death unclear pending a postmortem examination.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vidush Saxena confirmed that the body has been sent for autopsy, and authorities are awaiting the report to determine the precise cause of death. Preliminary findings suggest the possibility that the woman may have consumed medication intended to terminate a pregnancy.
The deceased was reportedly the daughter of a police officer stationed in Chandauli district. Following a complaint filed by her family, investigators detained a senior student from the same nursing college for questioning. The suspect, later identified as her boyfriend, was arrested from his residence in the Mirganj area of Jaunpur district during the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
Police investigations revealed that the couple had been in a relationship for approximately two years. During interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted that the woman was three months pregnant. He further disclosed that the couple had approached qualified medical professionals for an abortion, but their request was denied due to the absence of parental consent.
Unable to proceed through legal medical channels, the couple reportedly turned to information from books and the internet to obtain abortion medication independently. Authorities suspect that complications arose after the woman consumed the medication, leading to severe bleeding.
An electrician working at the guest house first discovered the victim at around 11:30 am and raised an alarm. The watchman immediately contacted the police, prompting a swift emergency response. The guest house, which operates as a boys’ hostel for the nursing college, was familiar to both the victim and the accused.
According to police, the accused panicked upon witnessing the heavy bleeding and fled the scene, returning to his home in Jaunpur. His subsequent arrest has provided investigators with key insights into the events leading up to the incident.
While heavy blood loss has been noted, officials have emphasized that no final conclusions will be drawn until the postmortem report is completed. Authorities have stated that further legal action will depend on the findings of the autopsy and any additional statements provided by the victim’s family.
The case has raised serious concerns about unsafe medical practices and the risks associated with unsupervised attempts to terminate pregnancies. Investigations are ongoing.
