Woman Gets 99 Years for Killing 3 Roommates in Virginia

A Virginia woman who admitted to murdering her three roommates before fleeing the state and leading police on a high-speed chase has been sentenced to 99 years in prison.

Alyssa Venable, 24, pleaded guilty in February 2025 to the 2024 killings of 60-year-old Gregory Scott Powell, 65-year-old Carol Anne Reese, and 77-year-old Robert John McGuire. A Spotsylvania Circuit Court judge sentenced her Friday to 99 years in a state penitentiary, plus an additional 14 years for a felony firearms conviction.

The murders were discovered on June 4, 2024, after another roommate returned to their Fredericksburg home around 10 p.m. and found a body. Police quickly found the others dead and launched a manhunt for Venable, who had fled in a 2009 Honda Civic.

She was apprehended days later in Steuben County, New York, after leading troopers on a 100 mph chase. Officers disabled her vehicle with a tire-deflation device before taking her into custody.

At the time of the killings, Venable reportedly told friends she had “hurt people,” left care instructions for her dog, and said she planned to kill herself in California. Her grandmother told reporters Venable was in “desperate need for help” and feared she might be a danger to herself.

Court records show Venable has a criminal history dating back to 2019, including theft, assault, and reckless driving.
