PHUKET —
A Russian fugitive who believed he could vanish into Phuket’s tropical paradise has found himself at the center of an international crackdown, after Thai authorities tracked him down and arrested him for serious drug-related crimes.
Igor, 46, a Russian national, was apprehended by Phuket Immigration officers after a tip-off confirmed he was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice issued for charges including drug trafficking and involvement in an organized criminal syndicate.
Police allege that Igor was a key player in an illicit network that sold narcotics online to customers in Russia, all while evading capture by relocating to Thailand.
International Cooperation Led to Arrest
The operation was led by Police Colonel Kriangkrai Ariyaying, Superintendent of Phuket Immigration, alongside Police Lieutenant Colonel Wisarut Lad-ong, Pol. Lt. Col. Wirot Srisapha, and their team of investigators.
Authorities launched the raid after intelligence was shared among several agencies, including the Royal Thai Police, the Immigration Bureau, the Foreign Affairs Division, and the Russian Consulate in Phuket.
Officers traced Igor’s movements and identified his hideout on the island. The arrest unfolded swiftly and without incident.
During questioning, immigration officers discovered that Igor had overstayed his visa, compounding the charges against him. He has been formally charged with being a foreign national who entered and remained in Thailand beyond the permitted period.
Facing Extradition
Following his arrest, Igor was informed of his legal rights and transferred to investigators for further proceedings. Phuket Immigration has confirmed plans to deport him so Russian authorities can pursue charges linked to the large-scale drug operation he allegedly helped run.
“This is in line with our policy to crack down on foreigners involved in illegal businesses, transnational crime, and activities that threaten public safety,” Phuket Immigration stated.
Part of Broader Crackdown
Igor’s arrest is part of a sweeping effort by Thai authorities to cleanse popular tourist destinations of foreign criminals who exploit the country’s tourism infrastructure as a cover for illicit activities.
Immigration police across Thailand have been instructed to focus on offenders involved in drug trafficking, working illegally without permits, establishing nominee companies for money laundering, or running scams such as fraudulent call centers.
“Phuket Immigration remains committed to solving problems caused by illegal actions by foreigners,” officials emphasized. “We will continue to protect the safety of residents and visitors and build confidence among tourists coming to Phuket.”

Igor’s case underscores how international drug syndicates often exploit Thailand’s popularity as a tourist hub and its ease of movement across borders. Law enforcement agencies worldwide continue to collaborate closely to track fugitives who attempt to hide abroad.
Russian authorities are reportedly preparing legal proceedings to charge Igor for his alleged role in distributing drugs via online platforms, an operation believed to have generated substantial profits for organized crime networks.
