Man Drove Mother’s Body in Car, Linked to Two Other Murders in Maryland

A Pennsylvania man accused of killing his mother and driving her body to his sister’s home is facing extradition to Maryland, where he’s charged with murdering two additional people and staging their deaths as suicides.

Kevin Ahn, 31, is accused of a chilling string of murders that began on March 24, when police say he strangled his mother, Hyun Ahn, 61, in Maryland before driving to his sister’s house in Penn Township, Pennsylvania, with her body hidden in the back seat.

According to court documents cited by local NBC affiliate WBAL, the same day, Ahn allegedly strangled Sun Tok Lim, 83, and In Yong Kim, 70, at their home in Owings Mills, Baltimore County. Both victims were found in their kitchen with belts around their necks. Their causes of death reportedly matched that of Ahn’s mother.

Kevin Ahn, described by police as “transient,” is awaiting extradition to Maryland on first-degree murder and assault charges. He also faces charges as a fugitive from justice.

Body Found Covered in Trash

Ahn’s alleged actions came to light after his estranged sister contacted police about a “suspicious incident” at her residence. Police reports indicate Ahn arrived unexpectedly, driving his mother’s 2022 Toyota RAV4, and was acting erratically.

When Ahn’s sister and her husband went outside, they reportedly saw “an unresponsive person positioned across the rear seat and floor” of the vehicle, partially covered by McDonald’s wrappers and other random household items.

Police say they also discovered a note left in a car window that read:

“Mom is in the car. I’m sorry please give her a funeral. My brain is fried. My mom lied, she gave me fake money from the N.A. So did my employers. I lost my mind, please forgive me.”

At Kevin Ahn’s preliminary hearing in April, officers testified that Hyun Ahn had been dead inside the vehicle for at least 30 to 40 hours before being found.

Initially, Kevin Ahn faced charges of abuse of a corpse in Pennsylvania for transporting his mother’s body. However, the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement that the charge was dropped to facilitate Ahn’s transfer to Maryland to face murder charges. Prosecutors noted that further charges may be pending.

Lawyer’s Bizarre Defense

During court proceedings, Ahn’s attorney offered a unique defense, suggesting that his client was not attempting to desecrate his mother’s remains but rather mourning her “in his own way.”

“He covered the body out of respect,” the lawyer argued, likening it to “dressing up a skeleton,” according to the Daily Voice.

The violent episode has left two states reeling as investigators continue to unravel the timeline and potential motives behind Ahn’s alleged killing spree. The Maryland murders in particular shocked neighbors, as Lim and Kim were both found dead in their home under circumstances initially made to appear as suicides.

Police in Baltimore County and Lancaster County are working together to gather further evidence, while prosecutors in Maryland prepare for Ahn’s extradition and potential trial.

Authorities have not released further details on any relationship between Ahn and the Maryland victims, or what might have led to the deadly spree.
