Mystery Woman Sought After Two Foreign Tourists Found Dead in Pattaya Condo

PATTAYA – Thai police are investigating two mysterious deaths at a condominium in central Pattaya that occurred within hours of each other on July 17. A Swedish man and an Australian man were both found dead in separate units of the same building, raising questions about whether the cases are linked. Authorities are also searching for a woman seen with one of the victims shortly before his death.

Swedish Tourist Found Dead in Jacuzzi

The first call to police came around 2 p.m. when officers from Pattaya City Police Station were alerted to a foreigner found dead in his condo unit on the 5th floor of a building in Moo 10, Nong Prue, Bang Lamung, Chonburi. The deceased was identified as 38-year-old Mika Huotari, a Swedish national.

Police arrived at Room 509 to find Huotari lying naked in a filled jacuzzi bathtub. His body was positioned on its side, and there was visible bleeding. A small but noticeable cut was found on his forehead and eyebrow. Although there was no sign of a struggle in the room, the scene raised suspicions.

The unit had been rented by Huotari since May, and he was scheduled to check out the following day, according to building manager Thanychanok Prajit, 27. She told investigators that the unit had daily housekeeping, and the maid discovered the body when she noticed the door was unlocked, the air conditioning was running, and water was leaking from the bathroom.

Woman in Black Seen on CCTV

Crucially, building security footage captured a short-haired woman dressed in black arriving at the condominium around 8 p.m. on July 16 via motorcycle taxi. She was seen heading directly to Huotari’s room. About 20 minutes later, she exited the building carrying a cloth bag and disappeared from view.

According to Ms. Thanychanok, Huotari often had different women visit his room. Police are now working to identify the woman in black and determine her possible connection to his death. Forensic teams have collected evidence from the scene, and the body has been sent for autopsy to determine the official cause of death.

Australian Man Found Dead Just Hours Later

Only two hours after the discovery of the Swedish man’s body, Pattaya police were called back to the same condo—this time to the 7th floor, where another foreigner was found dead in Room 715.

The second victim was identified as Michael Shane, a 54-year-old Australian national. He was found lying in a pool of blood, with a broken glass positioned near his left elbow and multiple bottles of medication scattered throughout the room. As with the first case, there were no immediate signs of a struggle.

Police are conducting a separate autopsy to determine the cause of Shane’s death. While investigators have found no direct link between the two cases so far, they are not ruling out any possibilities due to the proximity and timing of the incidents.

Crime and Safety in Pattaya

Pattaya, known globally for its vibrant nightlife and heavy tourist traffic, has often faced scrutiny over tourist safety. Alcohol, recreational drugs, and sex work are common in certain areas and have occasionally contributed to violent incidents or accidental deaths. Police say they are increasing patrols and surveillance in response to public concern.

Despite recent headlines, officials maintain that Pattaya remains largely safe. According to 2025 data from Numbeo, Pattaya was ranked the 9th safest city in Southeast Asia, with over 99% of tourists experiencing no major incidents. However, cases like these underscore the need for continued vigilance and effective policing.

The search continues for the woman last seen with Mika Huotari, and police are reviewing entry logs and surveillance footage to track her movements. The outcome of the autopsies will be key in determining whether these two deaths were tragic coincidences or something more sinister.
