NJ Teacher Pleads Guilty to Student Sex Crimes, Faces Decade in Prison
In a case that has shocked a New Jersey community, a former high school teacher has confessed to sexually assaulting two of her teenage students, actions a local police chief condemned as a profound “betrayal of trust.” Julie Rizzitello, 37, a former English teacher at Wall Township High School, entered a guilty plea on August 29, 2024, to two counts of second-degree sexual assault. The plea agreement is expected to result in a 10-year prison sentence, marking a steep fall from grace for the educator who was once entrusted with shaping young minds.
The disturbing details emerged through investigations by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. The initial case came to light in the summer of 2024 after an anonymous tip was sent to school officials, prompting a swift police inquiry. Authorities discovered that Rizzitello had engaged in a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student between April and June of that year. Their encounters occurred in her car across three New Jersey townships: Wall, Belmar, and Brick. The investigation, which included a search of the victim’s phone, uncovered “numerous communications and photographs of a sexual nature,” including nude images she had sent him. The victim had also confided in his friends about the relationship.
Rizzitello was arrested on July 3, 2024. However, her initial arrest opened a door to a darker, older secret. During the ensuing investigation, a second victim came forward, revealing that Rizzitello had engaged in a similar sexual relationship with him when he was just 17 years old. This misconduct spanned from 2017 to 2018, revealing that her predatory behavior was not an isolated incident but a longer-standing pattern that had gone undetected for years.
Rizzitello, who had taught ninth-grade English and SAT preparation since being hired in 2013, resigned from her position just prior to her arrest. Her guilty plea before Superior Court Judge Jill G. O’Malley means she avoids a trial and the potential for an even longer sentence. However, the consequences of her actions will extend far beyond her anticipated decade behind bars.
Her sentencing is scheduled for January 9, 2026. As part of her plea deal, in addition to the prison term, Rizzitello will be required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law, a status that will severely restrict her life after prison. She will also be subject to parole supervision for life. The prosecution has also stated it will seek to have her permanently forfeit any right to hold public office again, ensuring she can never return to a position of authority over children.
Wall Township Police Chief Sean O’Halloran, commenting on the case, focused on the victims, praising their courage for coming forward. He emphasized that the protection of youth is a paramount priority for his department, a duty made critically important when the threat comes from within a trusted institution.
