Singapore Man Jailed for Assaulting Ex-Girlfriend
A 37-year-old Singaporean man has been sentenced to 15 weeks in jail after repeatedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend, stalking her, and stealing her phone. He is currently out on bail pending appeal.
The man, whose name cannot be published due to a gag order protecting the victim’s identity, faced four charges—three counts of voluntarily causing hurt in 2022 and one count of theft. He claimed trial but was found guilty on all counts.
The Relationship Turned Sour
The victim, identified only as Ms V, first met the offender in early 2022 after hitching a ride through a Telegram chat group. They entered into a relationship, but she later discovered that he was married, going through a divorce, had children, and was seeing another woman.
Ms V attempted to end the relationship around April 2022, but the man would not accept it. He called her constantly, appeared below her block, and often snatched her belongings to stop her from leaving for work or appointments.
First Assault – July 2022
On July 22, 2022, Ms V spotted the offender waiting in his car below her flat. She tried to avoid him but was caught, dragged to his car, and driven away. He verbally abused her, calling her names, and physically assaulted her by hitting her head and arms, twisting her hand, and grabbing her chest.
He eventually drove her to Raffles Marina in Tuas, where she managed to get help from a security guard who called police.
Second Assault – November 2022
On November 23, the man offered to buy Ms V a replacement phone after breaking several of hers. After drinks, he insisted on taking her to a hotel. CCTV footage showed him dragging her by the wrist, pulling her into a room, and assaulting her, causing nosebleeds, bruises, and even a suspected chest fracture. Paramedics later intervened.
Third Assault & Theft – Clarke Quay
Days later, Ms V met the offender again at a nightclub with friends. When she refused to leave with him, he snatched her phone, blocked her path, and dragged her towards his car. He punched her in the face, pulled her out of a vehicle, and caused further injuries before she escaped with a friend’s help.
The theft of the phone formed the basis of the fourth charge.
Defence Rejected
Representing himself, the man argued that his drink had been spiked, that CCTV footage was tampered with, and that the stolen phone was actually a company device. He also made wide-ranging allegations of conspiracies, corruption, and revenge plots linked to a supposed smuggling syndicate case.
District Judge Cheng Yuxi dismissed his defences as “speculative, fanciful and wholly without merit,” pointing to overwhelming evidence, including CCTV footage and consistent testimony from Ms V.
The offender was sentenced to 15 weeks’ jail. He is appealing both his conviction and sentence.
