Florida Man Faces Death Penalty for Killing Sister After Eviction

A Florida man accused of fatally shooting his sister in Miami earlier this year may face the death penalty if convicted, prosecutors announced this week.

The suspect, Pedro Pablo Linares, 57, was arrested in July following a months-long investigation into the April 4 killing of his sister, 60-year-old Beatriz Linares-Calamita, at her workplace. According to an arrest warrant, tensions escalated after Linares-Calamita forced her brother out of their mother’s home, citing his refusal to contribute financially or help care for the household.

Following his eviction, Linares allegedly began appearing uninvited at his sister’s residence. The conflict reached a deadly climax when, according to police, Linares arrived at her workplace in Miami on April 4. Surveillance footage captured him first attempting to enter around 4:59 p.m., wearing blue gloves and a surgical mask. He was unable to get inside at that time.

Roughly 30 minutes later, he returned. This time, the front door was open. Investigators say Linares entered the building with a firearm in hand and shot his sister multiple times at close range before fleeing the scene.

The attack was caught on a Ring doorbell camera, and still images from the footage were later shown to Linares-Calamita’s husband and daughter, who identified him as the shooter.

After the killing, police said Linares fled to Louisiana, where he remained in hiding until his arrest on July 15. He now faces charges of first-degree murder, armed burglary, and assault. A grand jury formally indicted him on September 3.

On Monday, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office confirmed it will seek the death penalty in the case, citing the deliberate nature of the crime and the vulnerability of the victim.

The case underscores the often devastating consequences of family disputes, particularly when combined with access to firearms. If convicted, Linares could join the list of inmates on Florida’s death row.
