Prison Officer Facing Jail Over ‘Romantic’ Relationship With Violent Inmate

A prison officer is facing jail after admitting to a romantic relationship with a violent inmate and smuggling contraband into HMP Lindholme in South Yorkshire.

Charlotte Winstanley, 27, pleaded guilty at Sheffield Crown Court to misconduct in a public office during her three-month fling with 29-year-old Jabhari Blair, who was serving a 12-year sentence for his role in a violent street fight.

The court heard that Winstanley smuggled a mobile phone and SD cards into the Category C prison and even sent a photograph from inside the facility in April last year. Prosecutors noted that the offence carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Blair, appearing via video link from Lowdham Grange prison in Nottingham, admitted possession of cannabis, a phone, and a USB stick. When told he would be sentenced on December 3—the same day as his 30th birthday—he quipped: “Thanks for the birthday present.”

Judge Meghan Rhys granted Winstanley bail until sentencing, warning her to return promptly on the date. Her barrister, Khadim Al-Hassan, said she had made a “full and frank disclosure” and did not attempt to downplay her involvement.

The case highlights an ongoing problem within the UK prison system, where inappropriate relationships between officers and inmates have led to breaches of security and disciplinary action. In recent years, a number of female prison staff have been sacked or prosecuted for similar misconduct.

Both Winstanley and Blair will be sentenced on December 3, when the court will decide their fates. For Winstanley, once entrusted with enforcing prison rules, the affair could now mean losing her freedom.
