Drunk Driver Hits Motorbike, Assaults Police in Patong

PHUKET — A pickup truck driver was arrested in Patong after a series of incidents that began with him striking a parked motorbike while allegedly drunk, verbally abusing the bike’s owner, and driving away, before later physically assaulting a police officer.

The incident took place in the Patong area, a busy tourist district known for heavy traffic and nightlife activity. According to police reports, the driver crashed his pickup truck into a parked motorbike, causing damage to the vehicle. Instead of taking responsibility or remaining at the scene, the driver reportedly became verbally aggressive toward the motorbike’s owner.

Witnesses said the man shouted abuse at the owner before fleeing the scene in his pickup truck. The confrontation drew attention from bystanders, some of whom later provided information to the police. The damaged motorbike was left at the roadside, prompting the owner to report the incident to authorities.

Police officers from Patong Police Station launched an investigation and were able to identify the suspected driver. Officers later contacted the man and asked him to present himself at the police station to clarify the incident and face possible charges related to drunk driving and property damage.

However, the situation escalated further when the man arrived at the police station. According to police, while officers were carrying out standard procedures, the suspect became aggressive again. He allegedly assaulted a police officer during the interaction, prompting immediate action by law enforcement.

Officers restrained and arrested the man at the station. A breath-alcohol test was conducted, confirming that the suspect was intoxicated beyond the legal limit at the time of the incident. Police stated that his behavior posed a danger not only to road users but also to public order.

The suspect now faces multiple charges, including drunk driving, reckless driving causing damage to property, fleeing the scene of an accident, verbal abuse, and assaulting a police officer in the line of duty. Authorities emphasized that assaulting an officer is a serious offence under Thai law and carries heavy penalties.

Police officials used the incident to reiterate warnings about drunk driving, especially in high-traffic tourist areas like Patong. They stressed that alcohol-impaired driving continues to be a major cause of accidents in Phuket, particularly during evening and late-night hours.

Local residents and online commentators expressed concern over the incident, calling for stricter enforcement and tougher penalties to deter repeat offenders. Many also praised the police for taking swift action to arrest the suspect and prevent further harm.

Patong Police Station confirmed that legal proceedings are underway and that the suspect will be handed over to investigators for further prosecution. Authorities urged the public to report dangerous driving behavior and reminded drivers that intoxication and aggression will not be tolerated, especially in areas with high pedestrian and tourist activity.

The case serves as another reminder of the risks posed by drunk driving and the importance of respecting both fellow road users and law enforcement officers.
